I guess the core of your post is the question: "Why not?" I want to
address that in this email.
Let me answer it this way; How much do you think it would be reasonable
to spend on creating this application?
Let me ask a second, corollary question. Where would you prioritize this
development effort? Should it come before or after the development work
that makes it possible to associate ring tones with caller ID data?
Ahead of or after enhanced volume on the handset? Ahead of or behind
enabling BlueTooth connectivity?
The point is that resources are not unlimited. And, with any effort of
this kind, working on one thing means something else gets put off.
Please recognize that we don't have tens of thousands of 22C customers
-- at least not yet. Perhaps, once we've sold tens of thousands of
units, it will be easier to say "Spend the money on XX," but that day
hasn't yet dawned.
I would certainly just do the job myself--but I don't have the skill or
the ability to test the result. As I mentioned, Capital Accessibility
isn't a Mac shop, and I don't believe Owasys has Macs either. But
there's nothing stopping a smart programmer from taking the firmware
files and creating a binary object that people could use.
Lastly, it's worth noting that many of our users don't even use
computers--not even for email. We are frequently told by people who call
us: "I can't use a computer, I'm blind." We dopn't argue with them, we
sell them a phone they can actually use in most instances.
Of our users who do use computers and could perform an upgrade, I'd
venture more than 90% are Windows users. So, even though we have no
Windows machines in the Capital Accessibility office, that's what we'll
post first--because that's where our customers are and because that's
what Owasys can generate without much difficulty or expense. Of course
we'll also need to announce a plan that allows customers to mail their
phones in for yours truly to flash for some nominal charge. But, please
don't expect us or Owasys to spend thousands of dollars we don't have to
build applications that only a very few individuals, probably countable
on one's fingers, can use. Frankly, we can't support that kind of
prioritization.
