Your idea is a good one in the sense that typing a lot on a twelve key
keypad just isn't very practical, no matter how good you get at using
the keypad to write alphabetic characters. The problem comes when you
attach devices to something, like the screenless phone, that's really
designed to be a mobile device. Ideally, you don't want all kinds of
extra doo-dads hanging off a mobile device for the simple reason that
they introduce just so many more ways for things to not work right.
So, what I'm coming around to, in my round about way, is that I expect
this will become possible if we ever get Blue Tooth into the Owasys 22C.
I doubt we'll do it over the existing serial port, though if for no
other reason than that we'd have to design our own keyboards and cables
to make this happen. Probably not something that enough people would
want to make it practical, especially if there is a Blue Tooth option.
And, you're going to have a much better option for these kinds of things
from another company very soon. So, at the risk of telling you about
someone else's products, watch for something called the Icon from
http://levelstar.com. The Icon, which I've helped design, addresses the
larger use case of needing to go back and forth between something you
can hold in your hand and something that gives you a full qwerty
keyboard (or braille keyboard), without having things attached. In the
case of the Icon, it slides 100% into its docking station which is about
the size of a Braille Note for qwerty operations, so that you have only
one device whether you're using twelve key hand held, or full
qwerty/braille keyboard.
PS: Both Levelstar and Capital Accessibility will be at both summer
conventions. So, if you're going to Jacksonville or Dallas next month,
plan to see us.
